Pillars begin title defence at Heartland

Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) champions Kano Pillars will start their campaign for a fourth successive title at Heartland.

The Nigerian top flight kicks off on March 7, and the defending champions have been handed a tough start to their title defence against Heartland at the Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri.

Interestingly, Heartland are one of the former clubs where current Kano Pillars head coach Okey Emordi once worked as a technical consultant.

"It's a good match-up to start the season, and I am sure it will be one interesting game," Emordi told supersport.com on hearing of his team's opening day fixture. "We are prepared for the new league season and to be the best we must be ready to face the best."

Last season's league runners-up and Cup holders Enyimba are home to Akwa United.

The Peoples Elephant have already hooked one of Akwa United's biggest performers last term in Bassey Ezekiel, and they also still have record-leading scorer Mfon Udoh, who joined Enyimba from same club in the off-season of last term.

There will be the clash of the newly-promoted sides when Wikki Tourists play hosts to Ibadan club 3SC.

Last season's Cup finalists, Dolphins will play hosts to Kwara United. who are making a return to top flight football after a season in the second tier.

The opening day matches will be held on March 7 and 8.
