Akombo, Sunshine Stars go top of NPL stats

In spite of the unfortunate death of Ocean Boys’ defender, Emmanuel Ogoli, in Yenagoa Matchday 6 of the Nigeria Premier League (NPL) ended with so much to cheer for Sunshine Stars and their striker, Ukeyima Akombo (pictured).
Sunshine Stars climbed to the summit of the Premier League on Sunday by toppling Dolphins Football Club that held on to that position 24 hours earlier following their one-nil win over Warri Wolves.
Dolphins and Sunshine Stars share same 12 points and goals difference but the latter have scored more goals than Dolphins after Week 6 of the top-flight.
However, it has been Sunshine Stars’ home invincibility at the Gateway International Stadium in Ijebu-Ode that has seen the side score 10 goals and garnered 12 points coupled with their Week 3 win on the road against Plateau United.
Apart from leading the log, the club’s marksman, Akombo, is now the leading scorer in this season’s campaign with four goals in six appearances.
The 23-year-old striker, who joined Sunshine Stars from Kwara United in the off-season, has scored against Shooting Stars Sports Club (in Week 1), Plateau United (in Week 3), Enugu Rangers (in Week 4) and Gombe United (in Week 6).
Sunshine Stars’ head coach, Gbenga Ogunbote, is happy with his side’s progress so far in this season’s championship but feels that it is still early to get carried away.
“So far we have done well for ourselves. We are top of the league and our striker (Akombo) leads the goal scorers’ chart. But that is not enough to get carried away now because there are still a lot of games to be played,” Ogunbote told SuperSport.com.
