Nigeria Premier League (NPL) champion, Bayelsa United, started the Glo Super Four on a goalless account against rival, Warri Wolves, at the Ilorin Township Stadium, on Tuesday.
Most of the fans at the Ilorin Township Stadium were unimpressed with the quality of display by the two Premier League sides on Day One of the Super Four.
Both sides left out a number of key players in their starting line-up and on the bench, while Beijing Olympic silver medallist with Bayelsa United, Chiibuzor Okonkwo, was dressed for the encounter.
Head coach of Wolves, Lawrence Akpokona, left out playmaker, Michael Okoyoh while the club’s leading scorer last term, Ehiosun Ekigho, started from the bench.
On the other end, Osas Okoro, Bernard Okorowanta, Emmanuel Nwachi and Stanley Ohawuchi were missing from the starting line-up though Ohawuchi is currently in the Flying Eagles’ camp.
The first half ended goalless after a drab display from the two sides. Bayelsa United point man, Otimoti Diri, was the main culprit in the opening half when he failed to strike the ball into goal from six yards after Wolves’ goalie was displaced.
But both sides stepped up a bit in the restart and two changes from Bayelsa United swung the ball in favour of the champion. Okoro proved to be a menace from the right wing but it did not yield any fruit.
Late into stoppage time, Wolves’ substitute, Ekigho, was put clean on goal after Bayelsa United’s central defender, Jerome Ezoba, failed to clear his line. To the shock of the crowd, the Wolves’ marksman shot tamely in the waiting goalkeeper and captain of Bayelsa United, Bassey Akpan.
