Bayelsa United head coach, Monday Odigie, has declared that the ongoing Super Four would only serve as a pre-season tournament for his side, as he aims to build a squad that would defend its Premier League title.
The Golden Eaglets’ assistant coach further said the Super Four would avail the chance to watch a number of young players in his side as well as the new players.
But Odigie warned that Bayelsa United would not be in the Super Four just to complete the number, as he wants to start the new season on a high since it could have a psychological effect on his team.
The one-time assistant coach of the Flying Eagles also knows that his side still has three crucial games to play and is cautious about throwing his best legs into the Super Four, as fatigue could set in.
The Bayelsa United also believes that the Super Four would serve as a test for his players not just for the Premier League but for the CAF Confederation Cup as well.
“We have the CAF Confederation Cup before us. Last weekend we won our first game after three matches, which is not impressed. Now we need to consolidate on that win to do well in our remaining games in the CAF Confederation Cup. It has been really hard for us due to the poor results but I believe that we have recovered from that poor start. Now that we will be playing in the Super Four, it will serve as a dress rehearsal for us and the opportunity to try out some new players and young players that we have in our side.
“No doubt, it is a competition we will want to win because it will be good for us and winning it will prepare us mentally for the new season, which starts next month. But at the same time, we have our eyes on the continent and we know what it means to do well on the continent,” he said.
Odigie also warned the other 19 clubs in the Premier League that Bayelsa United is not ready to surrender its title in the new season.
