Kwara Utd Restates Continental Target

With the 2009/2010 Globacom Premier League underway after Week 1 matches were concluded on Sunday, Kwara United chairman, Prince Oladimeji Thompson, has declared that the target of the club would be to win a continental ticket by the end of the season.
Kwara United began life at the top-flight of league football in Nigeria away to Gateway FC of Abeokuta on Sunday at the M.K.O. Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta by securing a 1-1 draw.
The Ilorin-based club is expected to play host to CAF Champions League campaigner, Kano Pillars, at the Ilorin Township Stadium on September 26.
Oladimeji said the target given the club management last season was to win promotion to the Globacom Premier League, which was effectively achieved. The Kwara United is confident that just as the club achieved the feat of returning to the top-flight division in Nigeria that it would also win a continental ticket.
Oladimeji also pledged that the management of the club has handed the technical adviser of the side, Justin Tenger, a free role in managing the playing personnel.
The freehand given to the former Niger Tornadoes’ gaffer has witnessed him signing on 29 players for the season already.
Oladimeji said that the four weeks of closed camping in Offa and the friendly matches played have no doubt put Kwara United in a better shape to compete for honours in the Glo Premier League this season.
The Kwara United chief also believes that the top-flight is no doubt a familiar terrain as the club only missed out for a season following its relegation in 2007/2008 season, adding that the club is back to battle for the honours at stake in the elite league.
He therefore, charged the fans, supporters and other stakeholders in the state to brace up for the challenges ahead in the season, especially considering the mandate given by Kwara State governor, Dr. Bukola Saraki.
He thanked the governor for his support to the club, and for encouraging an enabling environment for the club.
