Last season’s top scorer in the Premier League, Akarandut Orok, said he is hoping that either Kano Pillars’ attacking winger, Ahmed Musa or Eugene Salami of Niger Tornadoes surpass the 17-goal mark in the league this season.
Speaking to Naijaligue.blogspot.com from his base in Sfaxien , Tunisia , the 23-year-old believes that one of Musa or Salami should set a new high for most goals scored in a single season of the Premier League in Nigeria .
Ishaya Jatau, who played for Iwuanyanwu Nationale now Heartland Football Club, holds a 20-year-old record for scoring 17 goals and last season, Orok equalled that feat while with Akwa United that led to his transfer to Tunisian side, CS Sfaxien.
The former Enyimba striker now wants the duo of Musa and Salami to prove a point by surpassing the record he could not go past last season.
“I am watching with keen interest through the help of you people in the media back home to know whether one of them will set a new record. I will be happy to see the one or two of them set a new goal scoring record because it will be good for the league, and it will mean that we have good players in our league,” he said.
Asked which of the players he feels is capable of setting a new high in the top-flight of Nigerian league football, Orok said the two players have a good chance since there are still two matches to the end of the season.
“Either of the players can set a new record. It is even possible that the two of them can set new records and that will be more than fantastic for the game in the country. But the Tornadoes’ player is very close and needs just one goal and he will set a new record. I am keen to see that happen and I hope it will open a new chapter in the domestic league for Nigeria ,” said Orok, who scored 17 goals in 32 games for Akwa United last season.
