NPL wrap for Week 24

After nine games were held on matchday 24 of the Nigeria Premier League (NPL), our predictor got five results right including two exact scores.

Title chasers, Dolphins and Sunshine Stars surrendered all points at Gombe United and Enugu Rangers respectively while holders won at home.

Plateau United 2 – 0 Zamfara United
It is five goals in five games for Plateau United’s youngster, George Akpabio. The striker scored twice from the spot against Zamfara United to hand Bitrus Bewarang’s side their sixth win in 24 games. This time, Plateau did not lose the two-goal lead like in their first meeting. The win did not change things in the drop zone, as Plateau United and Zamfara United remain in relegation.
Our prediction: 2 – 1

Niger Tornadoes 1 – 1 Lobi Stars
Sibi Gwar kept up his scoring run by putting Niger Tornadoes in front inside the first quarter of an hour of the game. But Tornadoes could not hold on to that lead, as Moses Orkuma grabbed an equaliser for Lobi Stars. Both clubs are still outside of the top half of the table.
Our prediction: 2 – 0

Kwara United 2 – 0 Crown FC
At some point in this game, it was looking like Crown will upset the apple cart. But Gabriel Agu proved to be wasteful in front of goal and Crown got punished within seven minutes in the second half through goals from defenders, Lukman Ijaya and Ahmed Mohammed. Kwara United are now seventh on the log while Crown are 18th.
Our prediction: 2 – 0

Sharks 1 – 0 Ocean Boys
A solitary strike from Under20 attacking winger, Terry Envoh, late in the first half was enough for the Blue Angels to see off Ocean Boys in this south-south derby. John Obuh’s men are now on 41 points and in fourth place as Ocean Boys occupy 15th position.
Our prediction: 2 – 1

Gombe United 1 – 0 Dolphins
The Desert Scorpions got off to a winning start in their new home – the Pantami stadium. Adamu Mohammed got the winning goal on the hour mark to continue their 100 per cent record over Dolphins since 2003. But the win could only guarantee a climb to 14th place on the table while Dolphins continue to set the pace.
Our prediction: 1 – 1

3SC 2 – 1 Kano Pillars
Two goals from Sunday Adeyemi and Gbolahan Salami inside 60 minutes set the tone for a 3SC win amidst pressure at the club in the past days. But Super Eagles’ striker, Gambo Mohammed made sure that the fans of the home side had their hearts in their mouths until the final whistle. Kano Pillars drop from third to fifth while 3SC are 13th on the table with 31 points.
Our prediction: 1 – 1

Warri Wolves 3 – 1 Juth
Juth proved to be no stroll in the park for Paul Aigbogun’s side in this tie. Efe Yarhere put the home side ahead on 28 minutes and Juth stormed back through Hassan Hussein within a minute. Yarhere got his second and Wolves' second on 61 minutes. But Oghogho Oduokpe killed off the contest with a third to break the hearts of Juth on the death.
Our prediction: 3 – 1

Enyimba 1 – 0 Bukola Babes
The holders were awarded two spot kicks and Samuel Tswanya converted the second on 66 minutes. This win for the champions cuts the gap between them and Dolphins at the top to 12 points for the third time. Festus Allen and his boys have now hit double figures of losses – 10 in all.
Our prediction: 2 – 0
Enugu Rangers 1 – 0 Sunshine Stars
For the first time this season, Rangers defeated one of the top sides. Dolphins and Warri Wolves succeeded in leaving Enugu with a point each but Sunshine Stars were unfortunate, as Ifeanyi Egwim’s 52 goal was the difference. Sunshine Stars remain in second – two points behind Dolphins – while the Flying Antelopes are eighth.
Our prediction: 0 – 0
