Sunshine Stars go three points clear

Sunshine Stars opened a three-point lead over the chasing pack in Nigeria Premier League (NPL) when they thrashed Kaduna United 4 – 1 at the Gateway International Stadium in Ijebu-Ode in one of Sunday’s Week 29 games.

Captain of Sunshine Stars, Godfrey Oboabona (pictured), Ukeyima Akombo and Medrano Tamen got on the score sheet while an own goal by Emmanuel Ambrose made it four for the home side.

Jude Aneke got the consolation for Kaduna United on a day their conservative approach worked against them.

It was Sunshine Stars’ Cameroonian import, Tamen that stole the show inside the Ijebu-Ode stadium, as every foot he put into the game turned out to be sheer class.

The nimble footwork of Tamen, who joined Sunshine Stars from Tiko United in the mid-season transfer window, undid United for longer spells of the game and no wonder, the Cameroonian got a standing ovation when he was substituted.

Sunshine Stars raced into a three-goal lead inside 40 minutes. First, Oboabona converted from the spot after a Kaduna United player handled the ball in his goal area.

On 29 minutes, the home side should have gone two up, but Atanda Sakibu missed from close range.

Three minutes later, Akombo benefited from a defensive mix-up by Kaduna United to score his seventh goal of the season.

Within six minutes, Tamen got the third for Sunshine Stars in a one-sided game.

Chances were at a premium in the second half but the league leaders still carved open the backline of Kaduna United before they got a fourth on 72 minutes.

The fourth goal turned out to be a gift after Akombo through on goal slipped and Ambrose erroneously cleared into his own goal leaving his keeper, Gabriel Agwu stunned.

Jude Aneke, however, got Kaduna United a consolation on the death to notch up his total goals in the campaign to nine.

Sunshine Stars are now on 57 points from 28 games, three ahead of second placed Dolphins whose game against Crown FC on Matchday 29 was called off after their opponents were involved in an auto crash.
