Okonkwo’s injury gives Siasia concern

Nigeria head coach, Samson Siasia is anxious to know the state of the injury Heartland defender, Chibuzor Okonkwo is nursing.

The Super Eagles' handler is in the dark over the injury of the right-back, who he named among his squad for the games against Guinea and Ghana on October 8 and 11 respectively.

Siasia, 44, revealed that the national team doctor will examine Okonkwo when he turns up at the team's camp ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifying against Guinea's Syli National.

"At the moment I know he's injured but I can't tell the status of his injury because he's with his club," the Nigerian coach said.

"Once he joins the team's camp we will have a true picture of his fitness. The doctor will check him and we will know what to do next.

"If he's unfit then we will have to name a replacement in his place (for the game against Guinea)."

Okonkwo, an Olympic silver medallist, missed the Nigerian Federation Cup final against Enyimba after failing a late fitness test.

Heartland defeated Enyimba 1-0 to emerge cup champions last Sunday at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos.

It is believed that the Super Eagles' defender is nursing a thigh injury prior to the cup final.
