Globacom Premier League side, Kaduna United, is set to unveil its new coach for the coming season, which kicks off on September 20 across the country this week, Daily Independent understands.
Though the chairman of the club, Sabo Babayaro, did not want to confirm this development at the weekend, it is clear that the Kaduna State government has given the club the nod to name a new head coach this week before the 2009/2010 campaign begins later this month.
The coaches in the hunt for the job at Kaduna United are Nigerian-born Ben Duamlong, who until last season was head coach of Gombe United and Maurice Cooreman, former coach of Enyimba, Ocean Boys and Lobi Stars, alongside three other foreigners.
The management of the club met last Thursday in Kaduna and decided to commence the interview sessions for the five shortlisted coaches.
As at the weekend, it emerged that Cooreman is considered as the man leading the race to get a contract from the club having undergone his interview session with the assessors of the Premier League side.
But Babayaro has decided to keep the truth of the recruitment to his chest until it is confirmed that the club has a new coach.
“All I can say is that we have invited five coaches for interview and they will be talked to. We want to know what they can offer us in the coming season. But nothing is concrete yet about who is going to get the job or not. But as soon as a coach is picked, we will hold a press conference to make an announcement of our new coach,” he promised.
But Kaduna United officials revealed that considering the fact that the club’s first game of the season against Wikki Tourists is just 13 days away.
The club is ready to speed up the process of bringing in a new coach at least more than a week before its opening game of the season to allow the new handler meet with the club’s players and backroom staff.
“I am sure that a new coach will be named next (this) week,” an official of the club told our correspondent on Saturday. “But no one can tell when actually the new coach will be named, but with the way things are going I am sure that the coach will be named before the end of next (this) week.”
However, there are suggestions that Cooreman is being considered due to his experience of having handled clubs in the Nigerian league.
