The match officials made a meal of the Week Two Globacom Premier League match between Kaduna United and Sunshine Stars at the Sardauna Memorial Stadium in Gusau, Zamfara State on Monday.
Naijaligue.blogspot.com understands that the centre referee and his two assistants lost charge of the match after Sunshine Stars’ marksman, Gbenga Ajala, put his side one goal up inside 10 minutes of the game.
During the course of the game, the referee made questionable calls against Sunshine Stars in a bid to favour Kaduna United, which was the home side in the game though it was playing away from home due to ongoing renovation at the Kaduna Township Stadium.
In the 66th minute, Kaduna United was awarded a dubious penalty and Peter Obiorah dispatched it to bring the score-line on level terms.
But the referee left the Gusau fans in an irate mood after he abruptly ended the match just a minute to the end when Ajala had rounded off the defence of Kaduna United in exquisite fashion and was about to slot home what could have been the winner.
The match ended with the fans in Gusau protesting the poor officiating and subsequently held the match officials hostage in the stadium for more than 40 minutes.
Naijaligue.blogspot.com, however, learnt that it took the intervention of the Nigeria Premier League (NPL) vice chairman, Shehu Gusau, to save the referees from being assaulted.
