Beijing 2008 silver medalist, Chibuzor Okonkwo, could be set to make his debut for his new Globacom Premier League club, Heartland Football Club next month when the top-flight division resumes after a month’s break.
Okonkwo, who completed a switch from Premier League champion, Bayelsa United, to the Naze Millionaires, could be listed for his side’s November 18 tie against Premier League newcomer, Dolphin Football Club.
The 20-year-old defender is expected to join up with his new team-mates next week after Bayelsa United was bundled out of the CAF Confederation Cup by Algerian represented, Setif Entente, last Sunday.
Okonkwo confirmed that he would be moving into the Naze Millionaires’ camp in Nnewi from next week in order to train alongside his new team-mates, who are still in the hunt for a silverware in Africa’s elite club competition – the CAF Champions League.
The full-back is not eligible to feature for Heartland FC since he has represented Bayelsa United in the CAF Confederation Cup and was not registered for the club tournament.
Okonkwo told Naijaligue.blogspot.com that he is looking forward to donning the colour of his new club when the Premier League resumes on November 18.
The former Gabros International Football Club man explained that his move from Bayelsa United to Heartland FC is not meant to spite his former employer, who are still owing him to the tune of about N3 million.
However, Okonkwo knows that his move to Heartland FC would present him with a new challenge considering the fact that the Naze Millionaires is a side with quality players.
“I have had a sweet experience with Bayelsa United and it is something that I cannot forget just easily. It was at Bayelsa United that I won my first league trophy in my club career and that will be hard to forget. But it will be a different challenge at Heartland because I know that they have a lot of good players there just like Bayelsa United. I am really looking forward to playing for them this season in the league,” he told Naijaligue.blogspot.com.
