Wikki Tourists’ forward, Rabiu Baita and Heartland Football Club head coach, Kelechi Emeteole, have been picked as the best player and coach for the month of May respectively by Naija Premier League Awards.
The team of judges from Naijaligue.blogspot.com and Naijapremierleague.com settled for the duo after impressive individual and team performances for the immediate past months.
Baita was head and shoulder ahead of the rest of the Premier League players with his goalscoring form, which witnessed him netting five times in four games for his relegation-threatened side, Wikki Tourists.
The Wikki marksman failed to score in only one game for his club when it confronted Warri Wolves at the Warri City Stadium on May 23 in a one-nil loss.
But the forward netted a hat-trick in his side’s four-nil defeat of Ranch Bees on May 1 and followed it up with a solitary strike in Wikki’s 1 – 3 loss at Minna to Niger Tornadoes on May 12.
Last Sunday, Baita’s goal on 33 minutes in his club’s 2 – 1 win over Enugu Rangers ensured that he edged his Tornadoes’ counterpart, Eugene Salami, to second place. Salami scored four times in five appearances for the Minna side.
However, the likes of Captain Ejindu (Dolphin), Jude Aneke (Kaduna Utd), Nonso Elias (Rangers) and John Owoeri (Heartland) followed in that order.
In the Team Manager’s monthly award, Emeteole, also known as Caterpillar, beat two of his counterparts, Okey Emordi (Enyimba) and Maurice Cooreman (Kaduna United), with a three-point gap.
The former El-Kanemi Warriors’ gaffer won the coach’s gong for May based on Heartland’s advantage of playing more games than others no thanks to the rescheduling of fixtures by Nigeria Premier League (NPL).
Two-time winner of the coach’s monthly award in January and February, Salisu Yusuf, finished in fourth place and four points behind Emeteole.
