The Nigeria Premier League (NPL) could in a matter of days meet with the league’s title sponsor, Globacom Nigeria Limited, Naijaligue.blogspot.com understands.
An official of the new Premier League board hinted that the meeting with the telecommunications firm was scheduled to hold this week in Lagos , but may be shifted to an unconfirmed date.
“The new Premier League board could be meeting with the sponsors of the league, Globacom. The meeting I know was supposed to have hold this week but I am not sure of the particular date. But for certain, they (the NPL board members) would be meeting with the representatives of Globacom soon. I am sure that a date for the meeting would be set soon,” the official said.
A staff of the league board’s secretariat, however, disclosed that Wednesday’s inaugural meeting of the new NPL would have the Globacom sponsorship deal as part of its agenda.
“The new board will meet on Wednesday. It will be the first meeting of the new board. They will discuss as part of the meeting the sponsorship deal of Globacom,” the NPL staff told Naijaligue.blogspot.com.
It would be recalled that the title sponsor had stalled in paying N900 million of sponsorship fee for this season and had insisted that it would only pay N250 million.
Its reason was that it did not get full value for the sponsorship of the Premier League.
Also, the Premier League would meet the holders of the television rights for the league, Total Promotions Limited.
The league board is hoping to ascertain the deal of the television broadcast with SuperSport, which Total Promotions Limited has been representing the NPL over the years.
The issue of the television rights has drawn several reactions from stakeholders of the Premier League with clubs getting no returns from the television deal.
