3SC, Crown gulp N839m in three years

The Oyo State government has disclosed that it has spent a staggering N839 million on its professional clubs, Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) and Crown Football Club, from 2007 till date, Naijaligue.blogspot.com can reveal.
Oyo sports commissioner, Ayoola Makanjuola, made the disclosure in a 26-page speech when he was giving an account of his stewardship since he assumed office.
The Oyo State commissioner broke down the figure saying that while Shooting Stars was given a total of about N569 million from 2007 to 2010, its city rival, Crown FC got about N280 million for the same period.
Makanjuola said in his address: “On resumption of office in 2007, this administration observed that after many years of its existence, 3SC could not boast of anything of its own, no hostel, no training pitch and administrative office. In fact the club depend solely on (the state) government for its survival.”
The state government had, however, released total sum of N568,105,487 as subvention to Shooting Stars over three years to enhance its spending.
These observations, he claimed, made him to facilitate increment in the subvention given to the club by government from N150 million to N200 million, which is paid at instalments of N16.6 million monthly.
Makanjuola also said the state government had released the total sum of N270,999,999 as subvention to Crown FC.
He added that the monthly subvention of the club has been increased from N8.33 million to N12.5 million with effect from June 2010.
The commissioner believes that the development has brought about a great impact on the performances of Shooting Stars and Crown FC.
In a related development, the Nigeria National League (NNL) champion, Crown Football Club of Ogbomoso, got N30 million from the Oyo governor, Otunba Alao-Akala, for the purpose of recruiting quality players and payment of signing-on fees this year.
The gesture from the Oyo governor is believed to have played a major role in the promotion of the club to the Premier League.

  1. that is a LOT of money. What did Oyo state in those three years spend on schools, roads, job training etc?
I doubt either club sells enough tickets to be self-sufficient though
