Six-time Nigeria Premier League champion, Enyimba, is now in a good position to clinch this year’s edition of the Super Four after defeating Kwara United 2 – 1 on Day Two of the pre-season tournament.
The Peoples Elephant had to come back from behind in the last 20 minutes of the match after Kwara United had shot into the lead just on the stroke of half-time through substitute Kabiru Sanusi.
Enyimba, however, was guilty of missing a first half penalty which will have seen it take the lead just eight minutes before the break.
Philip Auta stepped up to take the spot kick after centre referee, Solomon Wokoma, had whistled for a penalty when Magnus Iwuoha was upended by one of Kwara United’s defenders.
But Auta instead lamely struck the kick into the path of a waiting Kwara United’s goalkeeper, Wasiu Ibrahim and it was just few minutes later that Sanusi punished the Peoples Elephant for Auta’s profligacy.
In the restart, Enyimba’s head coach, Okey Emordi, threw in David Tyavkase, Henry Uche and Rasheed Olaniyi and his tactics paid off, as the Peoples Elephant led a late surge on Kwara United’s goal area.
In the last 20 minutes, Enyimba struck the equaliser after defender Ekene Iwuorie connected Kenneth Anyanwu’s corner kick.
On 87 minutes, lovely interchange from the midfield in a counter-attack led to Enyimba’s winning goal.
It was the full-backs of Emordi’s men that connected to put an end of Kwara United’s lame battle, as Anyanwu playing from left-back volleyed past substitute goalie, Saliu Mustapha, from Ofem Inah’s cross from the right wing.
Enyimba should have made it 3-1 but Atanda Sakibu missed from inside the six-yard box.
