Over a dozen of influential players of Nigeria Premier League (NPL) side, Dolphin Football Club, stayed away from Tuesday’s pre-season programme of the side at the Liberation Stadium, Port Harcourt.
Spokesman of the club, China Acheru, told SuperSport.com from the team’s base that only 14 players from the 30 retained from last season’s campaign turned up for training on Tuesday morning.
Only 11 outfield players and three goalkeepers were reportedly at the training session to the amazement of the coaching staff of the NPL side led by Stanley Eguma.
Also, hundreds of players on trials showed up for the club’s pre-season programme, according to Acheru.
However, top Dolphin FC players missing from the team’s camp are Captain Ejindu, Uche Oguchi, Sunday Mbah, Achibi Ewenike, Victor Ezuruike and Osita Echendu among others.
Ejindu and Oguchi are understood to be on the transfer wish-list of Enyimba and Enugu Rangers respectively while Mbah is believed to be in Kano and could join last season’s runners-up, Kano Pillars.
But Ewenike’s whereabouts remains unknown.
The duo of Ezuruike and Echendu took permission to watch Heartland play JS Kabylie in the CAF Champions League last Sunday in Owerri.
They have since not returned to Dolphin’s camp after that match.
But Acheru said he feels some of the players may be aggrieved over unpaid salaries and contract fees.
However, he said the issue bordering on the debt owed the players should be resolved in a matter of days.
“I think most of the players not happy about being owed, which we understand. But we expect that the money will be paid soon and we should have a full house this weekend,” he said.
