With 12 days to the kick off of the 2010/2011 campaign in Nigeria’s top-flight the country’s Premier League board has reiterated its stand on ensuring that the 20 top clubs use television and football friendly stadia all through the season.
Chairman of the Nigeria Premier League (NPL), Davidson Owumi, disclosed to SuperSport.com that “the inspection or insistence on television and football-friendly venue is not a one-off arrangement.”
He explained that the exercise of ensuring that match venues meet the specified requirements of the Premier League will be continuous all through the season.
Owumi warned that any venue found lacking in meeting the specified requirements will be struck off the approved list of stadia by NPL and the erring club will be moved to a decent stadium that meets the requirements.
“The issue of match venues we are taking seriously I must tell you. The inspection or insistence on television and football-friendly venue is not a one-off arrangement. We will have independent assessors and match commissioners that will give us report from time to time as it concerns the league venues.
“It will be a continuous approach on the part of the NPL in the inspection of the venues. And if we find any venue lacking the specified requirement even mid-way in the season we will not hesitate to clamp down on such venue and the club. This is one of the ways we intend to bring reforms to the Premier League and make it sellable to the world,” Owumi said.
