Title race will drag to last day - Godwin

Defender Emah Godwin has stated that the clash between his team, Dolphins and Sunshine Stars will not decide the Nigeria Premier League (NPL) title race this season.

Dolphins and Sunshine Stars have been neck in neck in the Premier League title race and observers believe that the match day 35 clash between the two will have a big influence in deciding who emerge champions.

Both clubs are tied on 64 points in the table but Sunshine Stars are in pole position with superior goals difference and will play host to Dolphins in the next match day of the NPL.

But Dolphins’ captain disagrees. “I think people are being too hasty in saying that our away game to Sunshine Stars will determine who wins the league. I don’t agree with that because it is not the last game of the season to start with.

“Suppose Sunshine Stars win that game against us and go on to lose their other games while we win our own. Doesn’t that mean that we have won the league? Mind you there are very difficult games for the two teams to play before the end of the season.

"So it is out of place to say that Sunshine Stars will win the league when we play them at their home ground in Week 35,” Emah, who has spent more than five consecutive seasons at Dolphins, told SuperSport.com.

On the game with Sunshine Stars billed for the Dipo Dina Stadium in Ijebu-Ode, the Dolphins’ captain acknowledged that their rivals have a formidable record at home this term.

Sunshine Stars are the only side in the Premier League with a 100 percent record having won all 17 home games.

“We know that they have not lost at home this season. But that does not mean that they are not beatable. As players we know what to expect in this kind of a game and there is no need to dwell on talking too much, as we wait for the league to resume again,” the centre-back said.

In the reverse fixture this season on match day 15, Dolphins edged Sunshine Stars by 1 – 0 via Owusu Addae’s goal at the Liberation Stadium on February 5 this year.
