NPL Week 8 wrap

Nine games took place at the weekend in the Nigeria Premier League (NPL) after the Kano Pillars versus Heartland was called off. Dolphins became the new leaders of the league standings after Gombe United dropped all points on Sunday.

Ocean Boys finally got their first win of the season to climb out of the bottom four. Here are the review of Matchday 8 games:


Kwara United 0-0 Enugu Rangers
Okey Emordi's 10 men kept their top four spot for the third straight week by earning a point at Kwara United after Ugonna Uzochukwu was sent off on 47 minutes for second bookable offence. The draw at the Ilorin Township Stadium sees the hosts slide down from fifth to sixth place.


Niger Tornadoes 1-1 ABS FC
Striker Abdulrahman Bashir struck for ABS FC inside ten minutes with his first goal of the season. But Tornadoes fought back just six minutes to the end of the first 45 when Sibi Gwar converted from the spot to earn his side a point at the Bako Kontagora Stadium in Minna to leave ABS in bottom place of the standings.


3SC 1-1 Sunshine Stars
This game was done and dusted inside 22 minutes as both clubs shared the spoils in this southwest derby. Sunshine Stars got in front through Atanda Sakibu on 14 minutes before Osagona Ighodaro drew 3SC level eight minutes later.

The game ended with 3SC fans going berserk on their team until a detachment of policemen saved the squad from the wrath of the angry fans who were livid with the outcome of the game.


Sharks 2-0 Lobi Stars
Bright Ejike opened score for the Blue Angels on 27 minutes and increased his tally to three goals. Seven minutes later, former Bayelsa United and Enyimba man, Bernard Okorowanta put the game beyond Lobi Stars, as Sharks moved out of the bottom four to save head coach John Obuh the pressure after a string of poor results.


Enyimba 3-1 Gombe United
Josiah Maduabuchi returned from a 14-day injury layoff to inspire Enyimba to a 3-1 win with a second minute goal. Born-again striker, Gbolahan Salami got a double in the space of 18 minutes to put the hosts 3-0 up at half time.

Mustapha Babadidi got the consolation for Gombe United on 76 minutes, as the visiting club lost their hold at the top of the standings after five consecutive weeks as table-toppers. Enyimba are now in the top three and three points behind leaders and champions, Dolphins.


Dolphins 2-1 Akwa United
Dolphins' N5 million signing from Enugu Rangers, Ifeanyi Egwim and Abduljeleel Ajagun scored in the first half before Lucky Nosa pulled one back for Akwa United to ensure the champions go two points clear at the top.

Dolphins go top of the log with 15 points while The Promise Keepers held on to a top 10 place for the third successive week.


Kaduna United 3-0 Wikki Tourists
Ladan Bosso's Wikki suffered their heaviest defeat of the season at Kaduna United on Sunday. Inside the quarter of an hour Oliver Insidibe converted a penalty and Buhari Jafar grabbed a double in the second half to help Kaduna United climb from 17th to 12th on the table, as Wikki slip out of the top half.


Ocean Boys 3-0 Jigawa Golden Stars
Three goals inside the hour mark made sure that Samson Unuanel's men outran Jigawa Golden Stars at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa. Eddy Ongolo, Onus Odah and Raphael Owerede got the goals for Ocean Boys, as they are now out of the drop zone while Jigawa Stars are second from bottom.


Rising Stars 1-0 Warri Wolves
The run of the remaining unbeaten team in the NPL, Warri Wolves was brought to an end by newcomers, Risings Stars on Sunday. Kayode Agboola's goal on 54 minutes was enough to earn Sunday Erelesusi's team all points to climb into the top half. Wolves miss the top three for the first time in four weeks after suffering their first loss of the season.
