No excuse for Jigawa draw - Ogunbote

Sunshine Stars' head coach, Gbenga Ogunbote has said his team have no excuse for playing out a 3-3 draw against Jigawa Golden Stars on Sunday.

Ogunbote told SuperSport.com that he had to make do with a make-shift defence due to injuries and national team assignment involving his players.

"Honestly we don't have any excuse whatsoever for playing out a draw against Jigawa Stars and especially at home. It's a disappointing result to say the least. Yes we have injury concerns in our defence and one of our defenders, Godfrey Oboabona, who is also our captain is with the national team.

"But that kind of excuse is just not acceptable in this circumstance. We had the game all wrapped up after coming from behind twice but the error between our goalkeeper and defender led to an own goal and we shared points.

"No doubt the game ended in a draw but it is a loss for us because if we had won we would have further closed the gap on the teams ahead of us while we wait to play our outstanding games," he said.

The ex-Gateway FC trainer added that teams in the battle for survival have proven to be "hard nuts to crack."

“Teams battling relegation have always been hard nuts to crack and we made a lot of mistake playing them which led to the draw. But still we have no excuse but we have ourselves to blame for dropping points in a game everyone tipped us to win," he said.

Sunshine Stars are on 38 points but have two outstanding games to play while Jigawa Golden Stars are fourth from bottom on 28 points.
