The duo of Ofem Inah and Moses James has told SuperSport.com that Sunshine Stars are still in the race to reach the semifinal of the 2012 Caf Champions League.
Both players were part of Sunshine Stars' team which defeated Algerian champions, ASO Chlef 2-0 at the Dipo Dina Stadium in Ijebu-Ode on Sunday.
Midfielder James, who played the whole duration of the game, said Sunshine Stars' win over ASO Chlef is a massive boost after their opening day loss to African champions, Esperance.
"It's good we won this game because it will help our confidence (level) in other games. We did put in a good performance and we didn't allow our opponents the chance to play," said James.
Inah, who replaced injured Sambo Soga, believes the Akure Gunners will close the gap on the Tunisian clubs, Esperance and Etoile du Sahel.
The former Enyimba wing back also acknowledged that they will have to avoid defeat in their away games to ASO Chlef and Esperance.
"It's good to be back in the team and to win is also good. We played to our strength against our opponents today (Sunday) and we would have scored more goals but we got two and that's enough to win it. Now we believe we can challenge the Tunisian clubs for a place in the semifinals.
"But we have a game in Algeria against ASO and then another in Tunisia against Esperance. These are difficult games but we need to avoid defeat and even win. It's not impossible," Ofem said.
On August 17, Sunshine Stars will face ASO Chlef on Matchday 4 of the Caf Champions League at the Stade Mohamed Boumezrag in Chlef.
The Nigerians will head to Tunis on September 2 to keep a date with Esperance at the Stade Olympique de Rades before playing hosts to Etoile du Sahel two weeks later.
Sunshine Stars currently sit in second place in Group B on four points after three games behind Esperance.
