NPFL new boys clinch opening day wins

Abia Warriors and FC Taraba, got off their debut season in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) to winning starts on Saturday.

At the Umuahia Township Stadium, Abia Warriors defeated Kaduna United two-nil in front of their handful of boisterous fans.

Chima Uluocha and Bishop Onyeudo scored the goals for the Uchendo Boys on a day Kaduna United rarely turned up.

Ifeanyi Onyeali was adjudged to have been brought down by Kaduna United keeper, Rabiu Hussaini by centre referee, Benjamin Odey in what appeared to be a very soft penalty.

Abia Warriors captain, Uluocha, stepped up and converted from 12 yards to score in the 28th minute.

The Crocodiles rarely troubled the Warriors who kept their lead into the break.

Abia Warriors kept pushing for a second goal and their head coach, Ladan Bosso, sent on Onyekachi Okoye and Onyeudo for Kuassi Judicael and Chisom Chikatara respectively.

Onyeudo showed how predatory he is in front of goal after coming on for just 10 minutes by volleying away the insurance goal to seal the win for Warriors.

After a shaky opening 10 minutes in Jalingo, FC Taraba made sure they protected their first half goal to win the full points.

Nasarawa United now managed by Mohammed Baba Ganaru started stronger and inside five minutes were awarded a penalty. But their new signing from Cameroon, Serge Ngomo Fabrice, missed the spot kick.

FC Taraba striker, Bobby Abel made United pay for that miss when he scored the goal that turned out to be the winner on 24 minutes.

Match day 1 of the NPFL will continue with three matches this Sunday and three more on Thursday, March 13.
