Akwa Utd open two-point lead

Akwa United have extended their lead at the top of the Glo Premier League table by two points after a 2-0 win over Nembe City at the Uyo Township Stadium on Sunday.

The Promise Keepers were clear favourites ahead of their Match Day 5 clash against City and Emeka Akueme, who made his home debut for Akwa United missed a great chance to put his team in the lead inside the opening 10 minutes.

However, Akwa United's early pressure deservedly brought about their first goal in the 13th minute scored by Ukeme Davies after Akueme set him up for the chance.

Ten minutes later, attacking winger Ubong Ekpai finished off a good move to make it two-nil for Akwa United.

Nembe City looked match rusty and hardly troubled Akwa United, who kept their top spot for a fourth consecutive match day.

Gbolahan Salami and Austin Amutu were the heroes of the day in Warri as their goals downed new boys, Giwa FC, two-nil.

The win takes Warri Wolves' points for the season to six while Giwa FC suffered their first loss of the season since being re-admitted into the premier division.

At the Lekan Salami Stadium, Francis Nnedum scored just before the break and his goal turned out to be the winner for Crown FC against Gombe United.

The fall of six-time champions Enyimba continued as they lost to NPFL debutants, FC Taraba by the odd goal.

Bobby Abel's first half goal was just enough for FC Taraba to win the contest and lift them to second place on nine points behind table-topping Akwa United.

The loss at FC Taraba is the second successive league defeat for the People's Elephant as pressure pile on their head coach, Zachary Baraje.

Heartland's poor start to the season continued as they have failed to register a win this season. Nasarawa United forced them to a 0-0 draw at their ground, the Dan Anyiam Stadium, where they have also drawn their opening two home games against Dolphins and Sharks.

Reigning champions, Kano Pillars also claimed a point at Abia Warriors following a scoreless game while Sunshine Stars produced a combination of defensive and offensive football to take a point away from Enugu Rangers.

However, the game between Bayelsa United and El-Kanemi Warriors did not finish as the score stood at 1-1 after Ndubuisi Ekwuruibe's strike levelled the contest for the Warriors after Ebitimi Agogu had scored for the hosts.
