Edo reveals art of scoring free kick

Edo (in number 6) scores from a free kick against Nasarawa Utd
Since the 2014 Glo Premier League season commenced, Akwa United's Nnamso Edo can be said to be the standout player. This is not just because of the fact that with five goals in 10 matches, he is the highest goalscorer of the league but the fact that he is a defender who has consistently got his name on the score sheet.

His goal ratio is impressive, and aside his goals, anyone who has watched him play will admit that aside his goals he is a bustling right-back who is a handful for opponents to contain and also hard to get past because of his physical strength and skill.

He revealed to www.lmc-ng.org the secret behind his goals, and the reason Uyo fans nicknamed him "Cameroon".

"Right from my youth team days I have always played free kicks for my teams and have always scored with them. The secret behind my free kicks is training. I train regularly, with the team and on my own, to perfect my free kicks. I am an EPL fan so I closely observe Frank Lampard and the way he takes his kicks. I also watch Steven Gerard and other great free kick specialists closely to find out how they take their free kicks and I try to learn from them and apply what I have learnt in my own kicks," said Edo.

Edo is an all-action, marauding right wing back, who is strong, tireless and can get very physical with opponents while brushing them off on his way to their goal or in defence of his own goal. Because of his physical style of play, when you hear fans call him 'Cameroon' one may be tempted to think he is a Cameroonian but he rubbished such thoughts and declared himself a Nigerian and declared his interest to represent the Super Eagles if given an opportunity.

"People call me Cameroon because my father lived in Cameroon for many years, but I am a Nigerian. I hail from Uruan in Akwa Ibom State here. My physique and playing style also resembles the rugged Cameroonian players of the 1980s and 1990s but I am a Nigerian and I dream of playing for my country if given the opportunity," the defender said.

Edo has scored five goals so far this season, one from open play, three free kicks and one penalty.
