Head coach at Enyimba, Austin Eguavoen, is confident that his charges are capable of competing for the Nigeria Premier League (NPL) trophy in the 2009/2010 season.
He told our correspondent that after leading the side to win the Federation Cup at the expense of Sharks Football Club, his side is beginning to shape up for the coming season.
Though the coach recalled how it was difficult for the entire team when he took charge as head coach, he was happy that his side was able to pick a continental ticket by finishing third and also end the season with a trophy against all odds.
“When I came on board as coach, it was a difficult period for the club because it was difficult for everyone to adjust. At that time, we lost some of our key players but we had to dig deep and at the same time, we used the transfer period in January to bring in a number of players to beef up the side and thank God it paid off,” he said.
When our correspondent tried to put Eguavoen on the spot on his side’s capability of winning the league next season, the coach responded that every coach does not enter a championship saying that he would not want to pre-empt ahead before a ball is kicked.
“You know the saying that goes ‘man proposes, but God disposes.’ Well no coach in the world would go to a tournament and accept defeat before it starts. So I am not going to say that we will end up not winning the league next season because that is my target as well. I want to lead this club to win the league because they have a winning tradition. Enyimba can challenge for the title next season,” he said.
