Gateway Will Prove Doubters Wrong, Says Omoruyi

Gateway Football Club of Abeokuta last Saturday showed its intent in this season’s Globacom Premier League when it thrashed Sharks Football Club by 4-1 and its head coach, Loveday Omoruyi, believes that it was a statement to other clubs.
According to the former Julius Berger Football Club coach, the Rock City Boys’ crushing victory over the visiting Blue Angels at the weekend is meant to prove those who doubt the credentials of Gateway FC as a Premier League side wrong.
An ecstatic Omoruyi made it clear that Premier League clubs that write off Gateway FC this season would do so at their own peril.
“We have started well this season. And by beating Sharks by 4-1 means that we deserve respect like every other big sides in the league. Results like this does not come in every week. But to get such a win is a massive boost for the players and the team. I hope that this win will change the perception that people have about Gateway being a club that struggles in the relegation zone every season,” he told Naijaligue.blogspot.com.
Omoruyi also pointed out that he believes that the emphatic defeat of Sharks FC last Saturday would force the fans of the clubs to change their minds by attending the home games of the club at the M.K.O. Abiola Stadium.
Before the last Saturday’s win over Sharks FC, the crowd at the home ground of Gateway FC had grown thin following poor results in pre-season friendly matches and its opening game when it was held to a 1-1 draw.
In the game against Sharks FC, the stands witnessed scanty crowd though it did not deter Omoruyi’s men from taking the Port Harcourt-based side to the cleaners.
“Also, our win over Sharks FC should be enough to bring back our fans to the stadium. I know they are disappointed that we failed to win our first game here (in Abeokuta) against Kwara United when we played a 1-1 draw. Well that is football for you. At times you win and at times you don’t,” he said.
But Omoruyi knows that if his side wants to lure more fans to the M.K.O. Abiola Stadium, it would need to continue such blistering form as seen last Saturday against Sharks FC.
