Nigeria Premier League (NPL) side, Kwara United, have strengthened their midfield with the signing of Blessing Okardi from Lobi Stars ahead of the 2010/2011 season.
Okardi is one of 10 new players signed by the club’s head coach, Kadiri Ikhana, ahead of Kwara United’s opener at Warri Wolves on October 24.
The former under20 player is believed to have sealed a one-year deal with the Afonja Warriors for the coming campaign.
Coach Ikhana explained that Okardi impressed in the games he appeared for Kwara United in their ongoing pre-season matches and earned himself a deal for the new season.
He believes that the former Ocean Boys’ captain will play a role in Kwara United’s quest to win a first league title.
“He did well in our friendly games in which he played in. And that is why he is part of us for the coming season. He has the chance to play his part in the team when the league starts,” said Ikhana.
However, Okardi is not the only new player signed by Kwara United for the new season, as another big name is defender Monday Osagie from Enugu Rangers.
Others new signings are Lukman Yusuf (from Union Bank), Shakiru Razaq (from Ranch Bees) and Yemi Olarewaju (from Great Fortune Academy).
Four players – Chinedu Ajanah, Gbenga Arokoyo, Kelvin Kpakor and Barnabas Imenger – were signed from the Kwara Football Academy.
Kwara United also kept 16 of the playing personnel that helped them finish fourth last term.
Three goalkeepers retained are Kazeem Yekeen, Mustapha Saliu and Lekan Abubakar. Others are Suraj Sodiq, Aiyelabegan Kazeem, Halilu Obadaki, Okemiri Ogbonaya, Daniel Philemon and Ijaya Lukman.
Yusuf Jaiyeola, Segun Atere, Sherif Jimoh, Olawale Isiaka, Sibi Gwar, Chibuzor Osigwe and former youth international, Soga Sambo, complete the list of the old guard.
