League chief wants Musa's record erased

Nigeria Premier League (NPL) chairman, Davidson Owumi, has said he "would love to see the 18-goal mark" scored by a player in a single season cancelled this term.

Former Kano Pillars man, Ahmed Musa, now attached with VVV-Venlo of Holland, holds the record after netting goals last season.

Owumi, who was top scorer in the Nigerian topflight in 1985 while featuring for Sharks, believes a new record can be set for this season's golden boot.

"I would love to see a player score more than 18 goals in this season's league. It is possible because we have a player who has scored 14 already. For me, I must say that George Akpabio of Plateau United has impressed me because in spite of his team's precarious position on the table he keeps scoring.

"There are others who have scored 13 too. Ajani Ibrahim and Jude Aneke have done well. I just hope one of them will score 19 goals because I have a surprise gift for that player that can erase the 18-goal record.

"And who says any of these players cannot score a hat-trick in one of their games even as we have four games remaining to play though a number of teams have five," Owumi said.
