‘Romario’ tips Sunshine for NPL crown

Niger Tornadoes playmaker, Shehu Abdullahi, has handed the Nigeria Premier League (NPL) title to Sunshine Stars ahead of other contenders in this season’s campaign.

The midfielder also known as 'Romario' by his colleagues and fans in the town of Minna for his skills on the ball told Naijaligue.blogspot.com that he believes that Sunshine Stars will slightly edge Dolphins, Warri Wolves and Kano Pillars for the 2010/2011 league trophy.

‘Romario’ initially refused to stick out his neck for any of the sides in frame for the Premier League title though he narrowed the race to Dolphins and Sunshine Stars.

But when our correspondent prodded him to take his chance, the skilful midfielder opted for Gbenga Ogunbote’s men and explained his reason for his choice.

“For me it is so hard to decide now because the title race is still open,” began Abdullahi. “But at this point the title is between the first two teams (in the league table) – that is Sunshine Stars and Dolphins.

“I am picking Sunshine Stars because they have got a very good team. Dolphins too have a strong squad. But Sunshine Stars have the advantage because in terms of finance in the league they are better placed than others.”

‘Romario’ however concluded that his submission on where the title might end up may not reflect the true picture when the season finally comes to a halt.

He still believes that Kano Pillars and Warri Wolves still have the chance in the race to the title.

“You know football is not played by (words from the) mouth. Things can change anytime. So Kano Pillars and Warri Wolves too can come from behind to win the league, but I just feel Sunshine Stars have put themselves in a good position,” the former Mighty Jets man said.

Sunshine Stars and Dolphins are tied on 64 points but the former edge the latter on goals difference for top spot.

Warri Wolves and Kano Pillars are in third and fourth places accordingly with 59 and 58 points respectively.
